Ansel Adams’ Photos And The Golden Ratio

Ansel Adams is one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, and photographer Elliot McGucken may have discovered a reason why. While viewing some of Adams’ public domain work, McGucken realized the presence of the golden ratio in the compositions. Black & White

I tried editing some of my photos in black & white, and I was surprised with the results. Since I started, I was sceptical about black and white because the highlight of my photos is the colour of the flowers/trees. However, not all the photos looked better in black and white. The photos where there is an equal amount of light and shadow play looked better. I especially love this one. I love the white flowers against the darker background, and how the light from behind gives it a nice depth. I am thinking of having this framed.

Spring Photos From My Film Camera

I mentioned here about taking pictures of blooming trees on a film camera. I started taking photos last year and hoping to be able to take a few every spring. This is my own little spring tradition. Today, I visited the Brooklyn Botanical Garden to take more such pictures. I won’t be able to see or post the pictures anytime soon since the film needs to be developed, which is why I am uploading ones from last year. I hope you enjoy it.

Photos From Last Spring

Last spring, I had decided to take photos of buds blooming into beautiful flowers and leaves. I grew up in Dubai and had never experienced spring before I moved to the US. I had always seen it in films and being described by my parents. I had never imagined it would be so beautiful in person. This spring I am taking more such pictures on my film camera. I take pictures of trees anywhere I spot a blooming one, whether that’s on the streets or a park and photograph from below so as to not have any other distractions in the photo.

Mom​‌’s Advice

Aren’t mothers just the best! Growing up my mother used to have so many advice and do’s and don’ts that I just wanted to be left alone. But life is so funny that nowadays I follow every one of her advice because I have realized how right she is. And not to mention I give them to my friends too!

Happy new year! We spent the new year’s at home, cooked our favourite meal and watched a couple of movies. I was never one to spend new year’s eve at a party with friends. 

Holiday Moments Captured on 35mm Film

Recently, I bought a film camera because I thought it would be great to have some memories in film. Growing up, my parents loved to take photos of us (my siblings), and it is always a joy to go through them. We have thousands of photos and most of them are on film. My parents have owned both kinds of cameras (film and digital) and I prefer photos taken with the film camera. The texture of the film camera is so beautiful, something that cannot be achieved with a digital camera. Plus it is always nice to look at family photos taken on film cameras because it makes it look authentic and back in days and that is how I am used to seeing family photos. Yes, there are hassles with a film camera but the end result is all worth it.

Since I got my new camera I have been going around experimenting with it. Yesterday I got the rolls processed and I thought it would be great to share some photos on the blog. These photos are from my visit to the Union Square Holiday Market. The reddish feel you see in the photos is a confirmation that it is the holiday season around here!
