A Fun Update / Winter

My Diet
Mostly consists of warm soups and stews. I especially love adding dry lentils because it gives the soup great consistency and adds so much flavour. A simple one I make is adding split mung beans and black/french lentils with beef and potatoes. Cooks in about an hour and so good with fresh bread. Another one of my favourite soups that include lentils is Ash reshteh.

My go-to clothes
As mentioned here, I have been wearing ribbed and striped sweaters a lot. They go very well with jeans and trousers. Since I cannot wear a lot of layers under a fitted sweater, a simple trick I learned to keep myself warm without adding bulk is to wear a merino wool base layer. Merino wool is great because it’s thin but still keeps me warm.

The best show or movie
I recently watched a French movie called ‘Custody’ on Amazon Prime. It’s about a divorced couple fighting for custody of their son. The father wants joint custody but the mother wants sole custody because she claims her ex-husband is violent. The movie is very intense—I was sitting on the edge of my sofa with my heart beating faster by the minute. If you have time, this is a must watch.

Currently reading
I just started reading this book. I picked it up because as a teenager I loved her Shopaholic series and whenever she comes out with a new book, I try to get my hands on it.

P.S. More updates here and here.

Will You Watch The Oscars?

Will you be watching The Oscars this Sunday? I used to be very excited about The Oscars—having hosted many Oscar viewing parties. I would try to watch all the movies nominated for Best Picture before the show and be eager to know if the movie I liked the most wins the Best Picture award. This year, I don’t find myself looking forward to The Oscars or any other award show. To put my reason in simple words, I think award shows have become very predictable.

The last couple of Oscars lacked any surprise and frankly very boring to watch. The same people in the same category win in every award show such as the Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA, etc. and end up winning the same category at The Oscars as well. I watched the Golden Globe and I feel like every other award show after that has felt like I am watching the same show over again.

I might end up watching the Oscars on Sunday night, albiet without any excitment. I have watched some of the movies nominated for Best Picture and from the ones I have, I really liked “The Favourite” so I will be rooting for it. Have a great weekend.

Top photo is a screenshot from Gabbeh. Although an old movie and not nominated for Oscars, I watched it last October at The MOMA cinema and was the best movie I watched last year.

On Plastic Consumption

Yesterday, I read an article in The Guardian about ‘Mountains and mountains of plastic in Cambodia’, and I can’t stop thinking about it.

A Fun Update / Spring

I’ve been absent from the blog for some time, not because I didn’t have time, rather I was suffering from writer’s block. I don’t want to post just for the sake of it. Last year, after being absent for a month, I did an update post on what I was eating, wearing, reading and watching. So, I figured this might be a fun thing to do every season. Even though it’s spring, according to the calendar at least, it sure doesn’t feel like it, so this update is something in the middle of winter and spring.

My Diet
My local farmers market is still looking like winter so my diet has been mostly potatoes in lots of different ways such as cut into chunks and cooked with beef stew, or mashed with shepherd’s pie or simply made into fries. Recently, I discovered these tortillas and have been on a twice-a-week taco diet. They are so, so good that they would be perfectly fine with just guacamole. Yesterday, I had fried chicken tacos with guacamole and aioli which was perhaps the best taco I ever made. The recipe for that will be coming soon.

My go-to clothes
I have been wearing my big down jacket non-stop and seriously looking forward to giving it a break. Under that, I have been wearing this turtleneck (similar here) quite a lot and only giving it a break because I don’t want any questionable looks. I love the soft look of the turtleneck with my bulky jacket.

The best show or movie I watched recently
These days I have been mostly watching shows, documentaries and movies on Netflix. The best thing I watched recently is the documentary called Abacus: Small Enough to Jail. It tells the saga of the Chinese immigrant Sung family, owners of Abacus Federal Savings of Chinatown, New York. I am on the hunt for some new T.V. shows to watch so I’d love to hear any recommendations if you have.

A book on my bedside table
I am in the middle of this book, and so far, I would highly recommend it to anyone. The story is one of the most interesting and distressing I have ever read.

Snow Day in Northeast

We are having a big snow storm and I couldn’t be happier. There is something about waking up and rushing to the window to see everything covered in snow. It is always such a beautiful soothing sight. What are your plans? I am having an off day so I am spending the whole day indoors. I am also going to make the creamiest very chocolatey hot chocolate, and if you would like to join me here’s how I plan to do it.

A Bizarre Incident

A bizarre incident happened to my friend and I as we were dining at a packed pizza restaurant in DUMBO. Our table was so close to the ones next to ours that it felt like we were all dining at the same table. I could hear every conversation they were having, and they could hear ours too. Once we placed our order, my friend struck up an interesting conversation, which carried on till our order arrived. The restaurant was boisterous making it impossible to carry on a conversation without speaking louder than usual–unless you lean in closer towards the middle of the table, which we were doing. About 20 minutes later, our pizza finally arrived. We were starving, and as soon as we grabbed our slices, we became quiet. The comfortable silence that only exists between close friends allowed us to enjoy our pizza in peace. Also, the last thing we wanted was to be blaring at each other with a decent size pizza in front of us. We asked each other if the pizza was great, which it was, and that was it.

While I was enjoying my second slice, my friend had a quick chat with the person sitting next to our table, which was followed by a confused look on her face. I couldn’t heat their conversation, but as soon as they left, my friend told me the person had asked her if we liked our pizza? To which she replied “yes it’s great”, and he replied, “you guys are quiet so I thought maybe you don’t like the pizza.”

I wasn’t sure how to react to it because I felt it was strange to ask strangers why they are not talking. I don’t think I would point it out, it’s simply not my business. My friend replied to him saying “oh okay” because she didn't know what else to say. “It was very awkward,” she told me later. I have my own opinion on conversing in a restaurant, and talking loudly in a restaurant is impolite and disrupts the dining experience for people sitting close to you.

The New York Times, for an article, measured noise levels at 37 restaurants, bars, stores and gyms across the city and found levels that experts said bordered on dangerous at one-third of them. WHO warns that “repeated exposure to loud noise often damages hearing and has been linked to higher levels of stress, hypertension and heart disease.”

What are your thoughts? How would you have responded to that question?

Do you find it distracting to dine in a restaurant that is too noisy? I also dislike shopping in stores where the music is too loud. Things we spend time, money and effort should, likely, calm us, which, sadly, is contrary nowadays.

A Fun Little Update / Summer

Sorry for MIA. The start of September is always crazy, perhaps after a relaxing lazy summer, it gets hard to get back to regular life. What have you been up to? I am striving to savour the last few days of summer as much as I can. Last week I took a ferry ride to Staten Island. Even though the ride to and back is about half n hour, it felt like I was on a holiday. Sometimes, doing touristy things in the city you live can make you feel like you’re on holiday, don’t you agree?  Here is what I cooked, read, watched and wore while missing from my blog.

Eat
These days, I am mostly cook dishes that are tomato based, since tomatoes are in abundance. Dishes like stews, pasta, dal, pizza, many more. I haven’t done any outdoor grilling this summer because my grill was probably stolen. Well, I don’t really know what happened to it, I just couldn’t find it on the communal rooftop anymore. Hopefully next summer with a brand new grill.

Wear
Since it’s the last few days of summer, I am still wearing my summer blouses and sandals! I will wear it for as long as I can ;) My favourite has been this blouse from Dôen (pictured). Isn’t it beautiful? The tops and dresses from Dôen are so pretty and elegant. Currently on my wishlist is their beautiful sweater. I have also been wearing a camel cardigan on those chilly evenings. A camel cardigan is such a classic, just like a camel coat. I prefer ones with pockets and buttons. It goes with just about everything and looks very chic. I love how this one looks so cosy and sweet, albeit the price isn’t.

Watch
What TV shows have you been watching these days? I have been so enthralled by Narcos that I have been going to bed (reluctantly) way past my bedtime these last two days! I don’t want it to finish. At times it does get too violent for me but the storyline is too brilliant to stop.

Currently reading
Currently, I am reading Jean Paul Sartre Essays in Existentialism. I tend to mostly read novels and I wanted something other than that. So far, I would say, complicated and clever. On a daily basis, I spend about an hour reading news. As sad as that can be, I think it is important to be aware of what’s going around yourself. Most news channels and websites are so dramatic and reactionary that it gives me unnecessary anxiety. I tend to stay away from the non-stop breaking news and preferential treatment to a particular region kind of media. Two news websites that are none of the above are World Socialist Web Site and Al Jazeera.

Total Solar Eclipse

Are you going to watch the total solar eclipse? It happens today between 1:30 pm and 4:00 pm. The main event, where you will be able to witness the moon blocking the sun, is around 2:44 pm in New York City. The last time a solar eclipse was visible in the U.S, was back in 1918! So it is kind of a big deal. Check your local time if you’re interested in watching it, and don’t forget to protect your eyes with either the eclipse glasses or other alternatives such as x-ray film and colour film negatives. You can also watch it live online here.
